Student Reading Goals

The student:

1. Enjoys and chooses to read independently
 

 
2. Uses a variety of reading skills and strategies to read
 
3. Understands the meaning of what is read
  •   Self monitors his or her own reading – The student knows when the
      meaning is lost and does something about it
  •   Applies “fix it” strategies when the meaning is lost
4. Reads fluently – with phrasing and meaningful expression (the way we talk)
 

5. Reads for a variety of purposes
 

6. Reads a variety of genres (fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, fairy tales, poetry,
    biographies, songs, newspapers, maps, folktales, historical fiction, and many
    more
