      At the beginning of the school year, your child was tested on the following
list of words. Your child should have these words mastered by March!

Beginning in October, your child's homework will have a "sight word" practice objective. Your child will be given a list of five words to work on. Place the words around the house where your child will see them, like the bathroom mirror or on the cereal box. Look for the words in the stories you read and in the words around your home.

Each week your child will have the opportunity to be tested on his/her list. If s/he is able to read all of the words on the current list and previous list, s/he will add a star to his/her personal Word Chart and a certificate of achievement will come home to you.

For example, to receive a star in the next list, the child must be able to read words in the entire previous list. The child must retain knowledge of these words, not just memorize them for a day.
 

Each child will move at his/her own pace, so don’t be concerned if your child is on a higher or lower list than other students. Your child may also progress more slowly or quickly through the lists at different levels.

Once students have mastered the list, they will begin to work on other skills, as appropriate.
