September
Newsletter

Welcome back everyone! I hope
that all of you had a terrific summer and are now ready for the start of the
exciting school year. This month
will be an adventure for all of us. Please
read below to see what is going on during this month.
During September, the class will be working on a wide variety of reading
and writing activities. To start the
year off, we will be working out of the Celebrate Reading text, and the
class will be introduced to the September literacy theme of stories that contain
twists. Some of the stories that we
will be reading include Miss Nelson is Missing and Esmerada.
Also, at the start of the school year, the class will brainstorm a list
of self-generated student writing topics. The
students will use these writing topics to compose stories for their writing
draft books and use such topics as free writing material.
The students will be writing in their draft books often at the start of
the school year and throughout the first trimester.
They will also be introduced to the beginnings of the writing process,
including prewriting (brainstorming) and drafting.
Furthermore, during this first trimester, students will learn how to
write individual paragraphs and incorporate topic, supporting, and concluding
sentences.
Math
![]()
This month we will be learning about Mathematical Thinking at 3rd
Grade. This is an introductory unit
from the curriculum, Mathematical Investigations (TERC).
This curriculum is student centered and stresses critical thinking and
mathematical inquiry. For more information about this unit in September, please
read the math family letter, which will go home at the same time as this monthly
letter. The students will also be
using the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley Mathematics Series as
supplemental material, especially for homework and mathematical review.
Science

During the months of September and October, the class will be observing
and recording about plants and their growth process.
At the start of the unit, they will be investigating how plants use water
to live and also explore root systems, photosynthesis, and toward the end of the
unit, learn about the pollinating process by using real bees!
Don’t worry, they’re all dried out and glued on sticks!
Social
Studies

The
class will be learning about the concept of community and feelings this first
month in school. Components of this
unit include the program Second Step, which is curriculum that introduces
the students to violence prevention, community building, and partnerships.
