October News

Monthly Newsletters

It is hard to believe that we are already in October!  I really enjoyed meeting most of you at Curriculum Night last month, and I hope you now know a little bit about how our school days are run.  Please read below to find out what we are doing this month in our class

Literacy

During this month, the class will be continuing with the Celebrate Reading Series and Writers’ Workshop.  At this point, we continue reading about stories that contain surprise endings.  The class is also working very hard on using the reading program, Accelerated Reader.  Most all of them already made their weekly AR goals several times last few weeks.  This program is individualized and computer based.  Each student last month took a computer-based test that helped identify his or her own specific reading range.  The range varies widely throughout the class and is used to help kids find level appropriate books at both the school library and the classroom library.  Kids have a chance to improve their Accelerated Reader score weekly by completing book activities (tests) on the computer.  The scores are also used to form the guided reading groups.  It is my hope that this computer program will add one more element to our classroom literacy program.

Math

We have been working on many different ways to use multiplication and division in our daily lives.  This new series incorporates hands-on, project based mathematical thinking and learning.  I have also been supplementing materials out of the Chapter 2 section of the Scott Foresman/ Addision Weseley math program as extra homework.  We are also focusing on problem-solving strategies.  They are always asked to explain how they are solving problems in five steps Which will help and prepare them for WASL tests THIS YEAR.

Social Studies

The class continues learning about community and violence and prevention.  Mrs. Marvin, our school councilor, came to work with the children about effective violence prevention strategies.  During the rest of October, the class will continue to work out of the Second Step violence prevention curriculum.

Science

Our classroom plants are growing very quickly!  We are taking observation journal and making a line graph to record their growth.  At this point, most of our plants have little yellow flowers.  We are going to predict what is going to happen next on our plants!
