November News

It was nice to see so many families attend the parent teacher conferences.   Please read below to see what your child is doing during the month of November in 3rd grade.

Literacy

During this month, the class will be concluding the text If You Meet a Dragon.  The kids recently finished a play called City Mouse and Country Mouse and had a chance to create and act out their own mini plays!  Also, as I mentioned to many of you at conferences, I am asking that each student take at least one Accelerated Reader test each month; however, many of the kids seem to be digging right in and are taking advantage of this reading extension program. At this point of the year, the kids will start bringing home their completed writer’s workshop stories.  Up until now, they have been working on brainstorming, revising, and editing with these stories, and we are now getting them published and turned in to books.  We are continuing on where we left off last month with paragraph writing and organization, and will be focusing on writing with voice and expression

        Math

The class recently started a new mathematical unit out of the math Investigations called Landmarks in the Hundreds.  This unit will help your child learn about important numbers like 100 and 1000 that we use to find our way around the number system.

Science

The class just started the unit called, Animals.  We will be learning about sow bug’s living environment and diet by observations.  These little creatures will stay with us next four weeks in our classroom!

Social Studies

This month we are studying about the history of Duvall and the community structure of Duvall.  The students have very interesting information about Duvall in their binder, so please let them explain to you what they have been learning about their own town!  We are also having three fieldtrips this month.  We are visiting the museum at Carnation Senior Center (They will briefly meet their pen pals there).  We are also having a walking historical tour in Duvall with Dr. Williams.  Lastly we will visit Dougherty House before the Thanksgiving break.
