for Parents and students
In Math class, we are learning how to estimate by rounding purchase prices and then finding the approximate total of a sale. In this way, students can get a better idea of making purchase choices within the confines of a BUDGET. We will be practicing these skills when the students go to the Holiday Store. Of coarse, you are not required to really buy anything. Giving your child practice with book orders or the holiday store reinforces "real life" uses of mathematics.
Try giving your child a BUDGET for their purchases. Have them make choices and estimate the total bill to stay within the boundaries of the budget. Have your child validate the answer by showing estimation. For example:
Budget $10.00
Books: Gone With the Wind $5.99---$6.00
Huckleberry Finn 1.99--- 2.00
$8.00 These books are within the budget.
