STARFALLK-2
students. It is a fantastic, free website for early reading that is excellent
for practice at school and at home. For Kindergarten teachers, start with the
ABC’s section and notice that everything that sparkles will have something
read to the children or will start an action. Also note that on the opening
screen for the ABC’s section, there is a link for Teacher Pintables. These
are great take home pintables for the children to practice writing and letter
sounds. For 1st and 2nd grades, you’ll likely start with the Learn to Read,
It’s Fun to Read or I’m Reading sections. These, too, have excellent free
pintables (There are
ABC printouts,
mini books,
reading and writing journals and much much more! All available at their
Download Center ) They even have beautiful color take home books you can
order for next to nothing. Want to teach your students the ABC's
in sign language? They’ve got that too! Finally, in the It’s Fun to Read
section, there is an activity called
All About Me that would fit nicely with many of the beginning of the year
activities at each school. |

Dr. Seuss
- I don’t know of any small children, including my own, that were not
raised with the assistance of Dr. Seuss.
Seussville
combines learning with fun for your grade-schoolers. There are click 'n play
games,
print and color sheets, and my favorite "Create Your Own Book," so simple
that even kids who cannot yet read will appreciate. There are also links to
merchandise and book related events for parents. |

Sesame Street Workshop
- Once your students return to the classroom, it is sometimes difficult to
keep them focused. Leave it to
Sesame Street to
offer some great online teaching tools. The site features games, stories, art,
music, and more for elementary age children. What child could resist Elmo
reading a book such as "Henry the Little Fish?" I also found the adventures of
Super Grover, an interactive game, where kids can help the fuzzy Muppet solve
problems with rhyming games. |
