Matt Christopher has written many excellent sports novels, so if you like this one, there are more.

Cleary, Beverly. RAMONA series. (RL 48.-5.6) Ramona is a unique person in her family. She and her sister, Beezus, have many adventures. If you read no other book, read Ramona the Pest. (Mrs. Brangwin named her cat after this character.
